Pass the Word June 27, 2010

"Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus" (John 21:4). I have used this passage intentionally as it dovetails quite nicely with the season we presently find ourselves — SUMMER (capitals used to emphasize my love for the season)! The disciples have just come off a three year journey with Jesus that involved learning from him, working with him, mourning his death and celebrating his life! It is not at all surprising that we find them taking some "time apart" in order to get some kind of a handle on where it is they are to go from here. I love that the passage begins in a fishing boat and ends on the beach, perhaps two things that represent for many that place of peace and tranquility. In a similar manner, we too no doubt find ourselves in need of some "time apart" after what I'm sure has been a year full of working, learning, celebrating and I dare say for many, mourning as well. While these are all typical components of life, they are at the same time elements that often deplete our personal resources leaving us in need of rest and renewal. It is during these times apart that we are essentially equipped and enabled by God to do all that is required of us in the months ahead.

Again, I see the context in our passage of fishing and the beach as being something of a metaphor. Something that represents for us that place where we can go and be rejuvenated physically, mentally, emotionally and of course spiritually! For some that will be the cottage, for others a road trip, while still for others the back yard with a nice bar-be-cue and comfortable Muskoka chair! And who knows that we may find on our journey a place of worship that brings us even deeper into the heart of God. I am struck by how the disciples didn't recognize Jesus from their place in the boat. Sometimes I wonder if we get so caught up in our recreational pursuits that we forget that God wishes to visit us in those times and bring to our lives blessings that are rich and life-giving. Wherever we find ourselves this summer, be it here or there, my prayer is that we would be given the eyes to see Christ and receive from his hand of blessing in order that we might be drawn ever closer to his heart of love and mercy.

Sincerely in Christ
The Rev. Capt. Stephen Pessah Incumbent
